How to fix “Weak signal” on your Android phone
Dropouts, one-bar rooms, and dead zones — how to get a stronger, steadier signal. Written for your Android phone, with your current router in mind.

These steps are written for an Android phone — Samsung, Pixel, and most other brands follow the same menus. Router-side fixes apply no matter which device you use.
A weak signal shows up as frequent disconnects, one-bar rooms, or speeds that collapse the moment you walk away from the router.
Router placement solves this more often than any setting.
On your router
Check the sticker on the bottom or back for the admin address and default password, and use the status lights as a guide: power solid, Wi-Fi solid, internet solid means the router side is healthy.
Your step-by-step fix
1On your Android phone, open Settings → Network & internet → Internet, and tap the gear icon next to your network to check its status.
2Move your router away from thick walls, metal cabinets, and other electronics — especially cordless phones and microwaves.
3Put the router in a central, elevated spot, like a shelf, so the signal spreads evenly.
4Keep the router out in the open — not on the floor, behind a TV, or inside a cupboard.
5Test the problem room again. If it’s still a dead zone, a mesh Wi-Fi system or range extender will cover it.
Walls — especially concrete and brick — cut Wi-Fi signal far more than furniture does.
Every floor between you and the router matters: if possible, keep it on the same floor you use most.
Note which rooms are weak before buying a mesh system, so you know how many nodes you need.
Android’s “Private DNS” setting can silently break the internet while Wi-Fi looks connected — set it to Automatic in Network settings.
If a VPN app is on, try turning it off: a stuck VPN often looks exactly like a Wi-Fi problem.
